In a historic victory that has stirred pride across Kisoro District and beyond, Mutolere School of Nursing and Midwifery has emerged as the Ugandan national football champions of Uganda. This landmark achievement marks the first time the institution has claimed the top spot in a country-wide inter-institutional sports competition.
The final tournament, held in Hoima, saw intense competition among the top nursing and midwifery institutions in the country. Mutolere’s team rose above the rest, displaying extraordinary skill, teamwork, and discipline throughout the tournament.
Mutolere School of Nursing and Midwifery entered the competition with many doubting their chances against larger and more resourced institutions. However, their performance quickly silenced critics. In the group stages, they outplayed perennial favorites such as Virika, Ibanda school of nursing and midwifery, with confident wins at Duhanga boys secondary school in Hoima.
In the semi-finals, Mutolere faced Malacha. After a tense 1-1 draw in regulation time, the match went into penalties, where Mutolere’s goalkeeper, Dusengimana Annet (in the middle), became the hero of the final day with two crucial saves.

The final match against Uganda Nursing bwindi team was a showcase of tactical brilliance.
Principal of Mutolere School of Nursing and Midwifery, Sr. Kemigisha catherine, expressed immense pride in her students and applauded the sports teacher plus the coach, she said
“This victory is not just about football. It is about proving that excellence is possible anywhere even from the hills of Kisoro. Our students have shown what discipline, teamwork, and faith can achieve.”
Sports tutor Ntakiyimana Singmas, who has led the team for the past three years, credited the win to relentless training, community support, and a focus on both physical and mental fitness.
“We may not have the best facilities, but we have heart. These young people are not just athletes — they are future nurses and midwives with the discipline to serve and save lives. Today, they’ve also become champions.”
Back in Kisoro, celebrations erupted as news of the victory reached the town. Local leaders, parents, and residents flooded the school with congratulations, gifts, and traditional dances.

The success of the Mutolere football team is more than just a trophy win it is an inspiration for youth across Uganda, especially in rural regions, to pursue their talents alongside academic excellence. It is also a reminder that institutions dedicated to healthcare and service can lead both on the pitch and in the community.
